The development of new materials with different applications puts additional challenges on processing technology. This is especially so when different materials have to be joined to make components which retain their individual beneficial properties in the composite product.

Sealers are products applied to surfaces, usually to reduce the penetration of undesirable materials, such as water or chlorides. Sealers may penetrate into the surface or form a very thin surface layer (typically less than 3mils). Thicker surface treatments usually are called coatings.
